Medical Council of Canada Evaluating Examination Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the MCCEE, you must:

  • Be a graduate or a student from a medical school not accredited by the Committee on Accreditation of Canadian Medical Schools or the U.S. Liaison Committee on Medical Education, but listed in one or more directories of medical schools approved by the MCC. The medical school must be acceptable to the MCC Executive Director.

    • International medical graduates must have completed all didactic and practical requirements to obtain the final qualification of Doctor of Medicine or equivalent qualification, including any postgraduate clinical training or internship required to obtain the degree, and be in receipt* of the final medical diploma. The medical diploma must entitle the candidate, with appropriate postgraduate training, to be licensed to practice as a physician in the country of graduation.

    • International medical students must be in the final clinical year of their medical school program.

    * International medical graduates whose final medical diploma is not yet available for administrative reasons may be granted admission to the MCCEE based on alternate to medical degree documents that are acceptable to the MCC Executive Director and that confirm completion of all degree requirements and the expected date of issuance of the final medical diploma.

OR

  • Be a graduate or a student from a U.S. School of Osteopathic Medicine accredited by the American Osteopathic Association, and be in receipt of the Doctor of Osteopathy (D.O.) diploma.  (Note:  Students must be in the final clinical year of their D.O. program.)

Additional Information:

  • Exemption from the MCCEE: An international medical graduate or a graduate from an AOA - accredited U.S. School of Osteopathic Medicine who is a specialist certified by a member board of the American Board of Medical Specialties, or by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada or the College of Family Physicians of Canada may be granted an exemption from the requirement of a pass standing on the MCCEE.   • Ineligible Practitioners: Graduates licensed only in stomatology, ayurvedic or homeopathic medicine, or those awarded only the diploma of Physician-Epidemiologist-Hygienist, Physician-Biochemist, Physician-Cyberneticist, Physician-biophysicist, Licensed Medical Practitioner or assistant Medical Practitioner are not eligible for admission to the MCC examinations.
