Medical Council of Canada response to the Future of Medical Education in Canada recommendations

The Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada has led a project entitled the Future of Medical Education in Canada to review undergraduate medical education in Canada and to provide recommendations to improve the medical education system. The Medical Council of Canada has had the opportunity to examine the recommendations from the final report and has prepared a response that will be reviewed at its April Executive Board meeting.

As an assessment organization, the Medical Council of Canada’s examinations provide valuable feedback to faculties of medicine on the performance of their students. The Medical Council of Canada will continue to work to ensure that the content of its objectives, examinations, and the work of its test committees align with the directions described in the Future of Medical Education in Canada report.

The Medical Council of Canada has created an Assessment Review Task Force to re-examine all aspects related to its examinations. As part of this review, the Task Force will consider all of the recommendations from the Future of Medical Education in Canada project and how the Medical Council of Canada can better support these recommendations. The Task Force will release its final report within two years.

Additionally, the Medical Council of Canada looks forward to working collaboratively with the Association of Faculties of Medicine of Canada on the Future of Medical Education in Canada --Postgraduate Project, a subsequent initiative looking at how residency programs can better meet current and future health care needs.
