Reporting error for some candidates who took the fall 2010 MCCQE Part II

The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) detected a reporting error in the Statement of Results letter for some of the candidates who took the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Examination (MCCQE) Part II on October 24, 2010. As a result, 22 candidates who were issued a fail standing when the results were released in December will now receive a pass standing. In addition, there are 468 candidates who have had their Statement of Results modified to reflect slightly higher scores than were originally reported in December, even though there is no change in their standing. No candidate scores have been reduced nor has any candidate had a pass standing revoked.

We have personally notified all affected candidates and we have sent them a revised Statement of Results through their online accounts on March 3, 2011. Candidates often consent to share their pass/fail standing with a number of partner organizations and, where this was known to have occurred, we notified these organizations to ensure that they have candidates’ updated information. The Canadian Resident Matching Service (CaRMS) has been provided the updated data, and they have graciously collaborated with us to ensure that changes in standing were relayed to residency program directors. We will also be updating information for the second iteration of the CaRMS match.

We have conducted additional verification of all fall 2010 MCCQE Part II candidates’ results to ensure that no further inaccuracies exist. If you are a candidate who took the MCCQE Part II in the fall and you have not received notification through your MCC-Online account, your scores and standing on the examination remain unchanged.

We have revised our procedures as a result of this occurrence and have made further improvements to our quality assurance processes to protect against a similar issue happening in the future. We will also conduct an in-depth investigation of the circumstances surrounding this matter and will provide a full account of it to the Central Examination Committee, Executive Board and Council.

We deeply regret this incident and any stress it may have caused. If you are a fall 2010 MCCQE Part II candidate and have a question about your results on the examination, we encourage you to check first your online account for any communications from us. If, after doing so, you have further inquiries, please send us a communication through your MCC-Online account.
