The Medical Council of Canada welcomes its new Director of Information Technology

Ottawa – The Medical Council of Canada (MCC) is proud to announce the appointment of Stephen Abraham as the Director of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer (CIO). Since 2004, Mr. Abraham was Algonquin College’s CIO and Director of Information Technology Services. Prior to that, he was also the Manager of Information Systems Development and Enterprise Systems at Algonquin College from 2002 to 2004. He will join the MCC starting April 4, 2011.

“Mr. Abraham has a wealth of practical experience and long history of leadership in delivering systems and services that respond to the complex challenges facing today’s organizations,” said Dr. Ian Bowmer, Executive Director of the MCC. “We are delighted that Mr. Abraham is joining our executive team.”

In his positions at Algonquin College, he was responsible for the IT systems that supported 18,000 full-time students, 35,000 part-time students and approximately 2,500 faculty and staff. He also maintained and developed enterprise computer systems including student, financial, human resources, payroll, budgeting and scheduling systems.

For the past four years, Mr. Abraham has been Chair of the Ontario College Council of Chief Information Officers, a council of all the CIOs in Ontario colleges. He also served as an elected member on the Algonquin College Board of Governors since 2008.

In previous roles, Mr. Abraham was a founder of an online music site, IceRadio.ca and was a co-founder of a software development company sofTV.net.

The Director of Information Technology and CIO of the MCC has many responsibilities, including leading the maintenance, development and enhancement of the systems that underpin the MCC’s examinations, developing strategic plans for IT renewal and collaborating with partners nationally and internationally.

The Director of Information Technology also supports the Application for Medical Registration in Canada, a new system that will facilitate the process physicians use to apply for a medical license in Canadian jurisdictions. This project, which is funded by the Government of Canada’s Foreign Credential Recognition Program, will culminate in the launch of a new application process in early 2013.
