Medical Council of Canada welcomes its new President and new members

October 20, 2009

Ottawa - The Medical Council of Canada is proud to announce its new members and its new President, Dr. Oscar G. Casiro, following its Annual Meeting held from October 18 to 20, 2009.

Dr. Casiro first joined the Council from 1999 to 2004 as a representative from the University of Manitoba. In 2007, he was reappointed to the Council by the University of British Columbia and he served as Vice-President of the Council in 2008. He graduated from the Universidad de Buenos Aires Faculty of Medicine in 1974, immigrated to Canada in 1980 and obtained specialist certification in Pediatrics in 1984. For Dr. Casiro, the MCC is not only a place to assess medical competency, it is also a place to create and disseminate knowledge.

“Council has already strategically positioned itself to be an important partner in the renewal of medical education”, Dr. Casiro said. “I see the next two to five years as an especially pivotal period in medical education because of a number of significant initiatives, such as the Future of Medical Education in Canada, review of the medical education curricula and the National Assessment Collaboration.

In addition to assuming the role of President of the Medical Council of Canada, Dr. Casiro is chairing the Medial Council of Canada’s Assessment Review Task Force.

The Council also announced its new members at the Annual Meeting:

  • Dr. Maureen Topps – from the Northern Ontario School of Medicine
  • Ms. Navdeep Bhullar - student member
  • Mr. Sébastien Lachance – student member
  • Dr. Frédérick D’Aragon – resident member

The Medical Council of Canada’s vision is to achieve “the highest level of medical care for Canadians through excellence in evaluation of physicians.” It conducts over 12,000 assessments of medical students and graduates every year through its three examinations, offered in both official languages in sites across Canada, and in the case of its Evaluating Examination, in over 500 locations in 73 countries.
