New President at the helm of the Medical Council of Canada
Ottawa – Following the meeting of the Council on Oct. 26, 2010, the Medical Council of Canada (MCC) was pleased to welcome Dr. Trevor Theman, Registrar of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, as the new Council President for a one-year term. Dr. Theman has served on Council since 2005 and was Vice-President last year.
“I’m very excited for the opportunity to work with Council and looking forward to working with Executive Director Dr. Bowmer and all the staff at the MCC,” Dr. Theman said. “I think it’s a great organization and I want to do my best to make it stay that way.”
During his term as President, Dr. Theman said the most important goal he would like Council to work towards is considering and implementing the recommendations from the Assessment Review Task Force, which was set up in 2009 to review how medical regulatory authorities and other stakeholders use MCC examinations and provide recommendations for improved examination structure and process. The Task Force plans to issue its final report in October 2011 at the next Annual Meeting.
“As an expert in assessment, the MCC is well positioned to create tools that will help physicians through their careers to ensure that they are maintaining competence.”
Dr. Theman graduated from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta in 1974. He completed his internship in Victoria and trained in general surgery at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Montreal and the University of Alberta, before setting up a general surgery practice in Edmonton.
The MCC also welcomed five new members to Council at the Annual Meeting:
The Medical Council of Canada’s vision is to achieve “the highest level of medical care for Canadians through excellence in evaluation of physicians.” It conducts over 11,500 assessments of medical students and graduates every year through its three examinations, offered in both official languages in sites across Canada, and in the case of its Evaluating Examination, in over 500 locations in 73 countries.
