The Medical Council of Canada celebrates the launch of Licentiate to Heal
February 28, 2008

Ottawa – The Medical Council of Canada marked 96 years of excellence in assessing Canada’s physicians by launching its history book Licentiate to Heal in a celebration that highlighted the Council’s illustrious past.

In honour of its upcoming 100th anniversary, the Council commissioned Ottawa-based author Christy Vodden to research and write a history of the organization. The resulting book recounts the evolution of Council from the time its raison d’être was championed by Sir Thomas Roddick at the beginning of the 20th century, to the political intrigue that surrounded its inception, to the growing pains it suffered as it adapted to increasing demands for its examinations, to the present day where it is a world class leader in medical assessment.

Licentiate to Heal will resonate with readers as it is a fabulous story about people, extraordinary people, who were deeply committed to the provision of exceptional health care for all Canadians,” said Dr. Rocco Gerace, President of the Medical Council of Canada, at the opening of the event.

The book launch was held at the Canada Museum of Science and Technology, where guests had an opportunity to listen to a book reading by author Christy Vodden as well as have their books signed by individuals who have made a tremendous impact on Council including current Executive Director Dr. Ian Bowmer and past Executive Director Dr. W. Dale Dauphinee.

“I am extremely proud of the work of our Council and test committee members, administrators, physician examiners and staff,” said Dr. Bowmer. “This book is a tribute to all of their efforts.”

Licentiate to heal was produced in both official languages and will be distributed to staff, members of Council, test committee members, and stakeholders in the medical community as well as to medical graduates who have been granted their Licentiate of the Medical Council of Canada this year and for years to come.
